Steam Downtime

Today Steam is going down for some basic maintenance. So if you rely on Steam for game matchmaking and lobbies, you are out of luck. Also the Steam Community, downloading and purchasing games from the Steam store will be unavailable. It will be down from 6pm Thursday USA time, so make sure you are logged in just in case there is a problem, as it will be down for 3 hours if all goes according to plan.

Do you think there is a way to do better maintenance schedules for Steam?

Re: Steam Downtime

OK, they started on time ... I hope they don't do a L4D2 Demo .. and therefore end 27 hours overtime ...

Seriously dude, games don't get much better than MW2. You're just biased, the game is nowhere near bad.

biased? I've stuck to the CoD series since CoD1, Ive been a CoD player since than, how does that make me biased, mw2 doesnt even deserve the Call Of Duty Title.. sure SP is good, but the MP side is horrible.. its not even CoD anymore.

Define CoD. How does a Call of Duty game cease to be a Call of Duty game? (Unless it's made by Treyarch..) The game Multiplayer is perfectly fine, I played online for a good amount of time on my friend's computer, it's a whole lot more fun that CoD4 ever was. So explain why it's so bad, if you will.

Re: Steam Downtime

Multiplayer, can't get any more in depth than that. So I'll just requote one of my posts not so long ago:

When you think about it, the game is just a hopeless console port that hasn't had any more work to make it better than the console variants beacuase after all IW did release CoD on PC only initially, though they'd rather make each game worse and worse until everyone either pirates the game or just doesn't bother playing it (downloaded or bought). Then IW will just say 'there was no support, PC gaming looks dead' and then focus on consoles.

With a community manager that would rather spend his life on twitter, ignoring almost everything MW2 (since Twitter is their 'official' form of communication) he gets paid near enough to US$250k and that's all he does, he gets to do well...nothing much. He made a post about 2 weeks ago saying that news for an update would be posted 'shortly' though nothing more has been said about the lack of patches the game desperately needs to be any sort of proper game.

As this excuse of a game stands, it's got no admins to ban hackers, which can't be kicked or banned, but possibly muted. VAC can easily be disabled in the game making anti cheat almost utterly useless and the big point that will fix some of the above: lack of dedicated servers. Another epic flaw in the game is that because IWNET selects the 'best' connection to host, you might be 'accidentally' voiding your ISP's TOU and acceptable usage policy. I remember reading how someone had to explain to their ISP why they 'had a virus' when in fact they had been chosen to host a server for the game and probably not realising they were violating their TOU, it's only a matter of time before ISP's of the world wise up and do something about this poor game developer.

A list for some of the problems can be found here: http://www.modernwarfail2.com/2009/1...ial-customers/

As for their anti piracy measures, they've failed in that area too.

Another interesting article about how to get a refund for your game that 'didn't work as intended' : http://www.modernwarfail2.com/2009/1...-work-for-you/

After seeing that small amount of why the game is so poorly made, I can see why people would rather pirate the game than waste $80-$90 on that ^.

edit: For those who'd rather contest me, I feel sorry for you because chances are, you've probably bought the game and though that it was 'good' even with 'a few changes for the better'.
As well as that, multiplayer pings are horrible due to the obvious lack of dedicated servers, forcing people to put their internet at risk and host from s***ty upload speeds, why the hell would IW think that no dedicated servers would be better? How are companies like gamespace or 3FL supposed to run free servers for all to enjoy and how are groups of people supposed to get on the same server if they live a state away? They can't, because there's no 'join specific game/ip' option, just a quick join option or join some random game with these options, it just doesn't work. And don't forget that if IWnet goes down for any reason MP doesn't work anymore.

Re: Steam Downtime

well tre0n, not that i play competitive anymore, but they have pretty much said "Eff you" to the competitive community and made it an arcade shooter, not even giving an option to make a mod for it

They have locked options that have been in the previous games..

/record, alot of people like recording there gameplay, they can't on mw2
/cg_fov, fov 65 is the worst option on any PC fps, we are closer to the screens than console players, it hurts the eyes.

the above are even critical to the casual gamer, just look at all the public server footage on cod1/2/4/and waw on youtube, there is alot, now people are forced to record with fraps ruining there gameplay due to it making the game sluggish.

and you can barely get into a game if you havent done the NAT options, and the games you do get into are laggy as hell, to bad for the casual gamers that are computer illiterate dont ya think? not to mention, they hitboxes are about 3 times the size of the player...

i have a great deal of respect for Treyarch, at least they are still supporting the game (which is about 1 1/2+ years old now?) and there community. they actually ask us what we want, not what they want to put into it, like IW.

EDIT: Cookie, you can play with friends, with the party option, however your limited to certain gametypes, and 9 out of 10 times, not everyone in your "Party" gets into the "server" most get timed out.

Re: Steam Downtime

i play with 4 friends almost every day and we have a problem possibly every 4th game which isnt really a big hassle because you just rejoin a new server

at the end of the day if you dont like it dont play it... you wont convince ppl who like the game that they dont

as for your site of errors:

Quote:
[A] Installation Issues

[A.01] DVD Won’t Read
[A.02] Steam
[A.03] Alternate Installation
[A.04] Windows 7 64-bit Incompatibility
[A.05] Missing/Corrupted Files
[A.06] Patches Do Not Fix
i got it on steam and have no issues so ill skip 1-3... 4 - im running win7 64b no issues... 5 - no missing files... 6 - fix what?

Quote:
B] Game Stability

[B.01] Freezing
[B.02] Unreadable Text [SOLVED]
[B.03] Random Crashes
[B.04] Screen Flickering
[B.05] AMD Crossfire And Thermal Scope
[B.06] Video Resolution
1 - doesnt freeze unless i alt tab 10 times during a load screen... 2 - always was readable and i bought the game on the day it was released (LOOKING at the screenshots they posted it looks like hardware faults) ... 3 - never had a random crash... 4 - never had a flicker ... 5 - dont run xfire so cant comment... 6 - 1440x900 never had an issue

and i stopped here because all i hear are people sooking about a game they were never forced to play... can choose not to play or can choose to adapt just like all us cs to css gamers did and should all understand that complaining so much wont change a thing
