October 22 is usually a plain day for people. This year it is special for two reasons. Firstly, in Hobart it is a public holiday due to the Show and secondly Microsoft starts selling their latest operating system at retail level. That’s right, some stores were open at midnight to start selling copies of Windows 7 in various flavours, others opened up at 7am this morning. In Australia we are lucky; at the moment we are one of the first to start the new day and first to try Windows 7. With lots of people loving the RC and saying good things, this os will eclipse Vista it seems. If Windows is not your thing, keep a look out for the new Mac’s or OS X from Apple or the latest Ubuntu Karnic Koala if that is your thing.
Are you going to run Windows 7 and if so which version?
My brother brought some sort of US license or something from Microsoft. It gave him access to all their OS. It enabled him the opportunity to gain Windows 7 long before the Australian release.
He loves it like crazy and disses Windows Vista I am using all the time. But he is the one who convinced me how great Vista was when that got released.

Professional: $448 (upgrade: $398) Home Premium -> Professional: $198
Ultimate: $468 (upgrade: $428) Home Premium -> Ultimate: $218
Would take these as the maximum price (HN not known for discount prices in their IT dept), but gives you an early indication of just how exorbitant Microsoft's prices for an operating system will be. Expect to find lower prices as competition heats up.
PS: Anyone got their head around what exactly is the difference between the three flavours? Sales catalogue blurb is too vague, and not had time yet to dig around for details.

tbh hunter, the installation is pretty much the only thing you need to do lol, some Linux distro's give you the option to install inside windows, its as simple as pressing a button lol.

When more people use them on the forums and have an active interest in it, it can be reported on. The reason why Windows 7 did get a news post of it's own is due to that os playing almost entirely powering peoples computers here for gaming. But feel free to put in a news request.

Re: Windows 7 launches
Most games will work. The program Cookie is talking about, is a program you use when you wanna play the OLLLLLD games.. Things like Wolf 3D, Duke 3D, Commander Keen, etc. I'm running Windows 7 right now, and I'm yet to have a game fail on me completely.. Some haven't worked "out of the box", but with some nice patching, they start up just fine. The game "Prototype" was one of these games, at least for me anyway. As was Mirrors Edge.
Best thing I can suggest to you.. Install Windows 7, give it a go, and try your games on it. Each machine in this world is different in some sort of way, so no one can give you a definite 100% true answer on whether a game will work for you or not. Only one way to find out.

Hence why I said 8bit programs
You can run xp in windows 7 with XP mode but afaik that doesn't have hardware acceleration so you can only run normal programs on it. Plus it only works on the Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. Home Premium gets a missing out.
Aside from that, anything I've thrown at it works so far, even MOHAA, which is 7 years old now. Whatever you do, don't use the beta's unless you really have to, since I encountered many problems that I don't get in the final version.

The competition between retailers. ie, Microsoft set their (wholesale) price and a RRP (recommended retail price), but with bulk purchasing power and profit margin cutting to sell more boxes etc, different retailers should be able to offer different prices, especially when selling as a bundle with other things (aka, Windows + Office that sort of thing). Then there's OEM (original equipment manufacturer) versions that can be purchased with new hardware, and student licenses (if eligible).
