To anyone who has not heard of Courtney Love, sit down and draw a deep breath. She was Kurt Cobain’s partner who was the lead singer of Nirvana before his untimely death. Basically after three years of negotiations, she finally gave Activision permission to put Cobain into the game. So what’s the deal? Well basically it seems from this source that Nirvana and Love gave permission to use the music, but not his image. Other sources have said she helped Activision to design the digital representation of Cobain. So she is fuming on twitter in some non sense posts and threatening to sue with posts like "For the record this Guitar Hero **** is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction." Which is also followed up by "Wow theyre just LIQUIDATING kurt and IM THE DEVIL? I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH GUITAR HERO I LOATHE IT AND FIND IT ODIOUS KURT WOULD HAVE TOO." Activision has not made a comment yet. To see the clip of Cobain singing Smells like teen sprit, click the original article. The game itself should be out next week.
If I were the marketing crew for another money grabbing mass produced game which is probably loosing it's "buzz" and peak after the third game such as Guitar Hero 5 I would consider a sinister strategy such as this. If you have the resources, it will result in additional publicity! Identifying how incredibly sensitive Courtney Love is over this subject I would exploit it by hiring at least about 3 different appropriate lawyers to research all possible laws, regulations and loop-holes involving this sort of "Rights to profit from the dead" or "psychological damages" or whatever so that I get a clear picture of our legal boundaries and limits.
If my lawyers can guarantee safety then I would implement it by creating the virtual Kurt Cobain image (Like Activision) to bait Courtney to try something silly as this. Such pop culture celeb gossip will stand-out to Gen Y and X market, I’m sure. Just a matter if getting the right channels for views.
Anyone reckon perhaps this IS a tricky strategy by Activision? Or are they just pushing their luck while knowing how sensitive she is, considering the difficulties of 3 year negotiation to even use the music?

Re: Courtney Love to sue makers of Guitar Hero 5
eh, she's just a crazy nut that needs to get back on her crack pipe. If someone created 3 years of difficulties for me over a couple songs for a game, I too would go out of my way to piss 'em right back off.
And anyway, why would you NOT want those songs put into Guitar Hero? The more the music's out there, the more that remember Kurt for who he was.

I'm not saying I knew Kurt Cobain... but i have a slight feeling he wouldn't be one to support a game like guitar hero. But as I said, who am I to say what he would've thought

True, but I like to imagine him looking down laughing at all the attention his glassy-eyed likeness is getting. Plus, I'm looking forward to seeing him miming along to Bush.
