| Nintendo Consoles - (GB, Gamecube, Wii) The Wii and the DS are the most recent in a long line of successful console and handheld launches for Nintendo. With the innovative Wiimote, the Wii captures gamers and non-gamers alike in its interactive gameplay. The DS is also a rampaging hit, taking a firm grasp on the handheld market as the top dog. |

Wii modchips
With the release of a whole bunch of different (well not much) mod chips for the Wii I guess a few questions have been (semi) answered.
It looks like my UK Wii will play Australian Wii games fine (without a chip) which is nice to know, I'll probably get a chip anyway though since it seems like it's cheaper to import games (and just about anything else to do with electronics) from the US than buy them here, and besides after shelling out for, and being disappointed by, red steel, I'm more than a little tempted by the try before you buy model of distribution... At £40 a game, disappointing is very disappointing. (Not that that's a justification from a legal standpoint, but since when have I ever resorted to those...)
Hopefully we'll soon see some homebrew stuff on the Wii, I think with Nintendo already seeing a profit on each console and the potential of the new controller still at least partially untapped the Wii could be the homebrew console of choice...

Any more news on what the mod chips would/could do?

So that actually works? I saw the 'Aus and NZ' notice on the back of my games and just assumed they wouldn't work in a UK system. I guess it's just PAL all round.
I saw the Wiinja chip advertised a while ago and considered it. I'd like to hear a few more testimonials before though.

Re: Wii modchips
Since all the mod chips say they allow any NTSC game on any NTSC console and only mention PAL if you can run NTSC games on the PAL console I have to assume that PAL is indeed just PAL. It certainly fits with earlier information and lying on packaging is a cheap way to dicourage the import export market... If it works...
I'd probably go with the Wii-key at this stage since it's the only chip that allows NTSC region games on PAL consoles (and only roughly half work still). Either that or one of the home brew open source chips like chiip (when they actually release the source instead of just binary blobs) since they should be able to get compatibility up and running the fastest (and they have the coolness factor of being able to hack away at your mod-chip source).

Wow, the solder contacts you have to attach these things to are really tiny... Like 6 points in about 2/3rds the space of a normal keyboard key... Still I managed to implement not-bricked technology so I'm a happy camper...

Re: Wii modchips
Pretty much flawless... My one hicup was that once I had the thing installed I didn't have a burnt disc handy so I had to make one before I could test it which was kind of annoying, but I already knew I hadn't bricked it so it wasn't too nerve racking...
Still I'm impressed, there is no noticeable difference with the chip installed except that backups and NTSC region games load up without complaint...
To anyone else considering getting a chip and installing it themselves I can recommend the wiikey as a good option but you really want to have some confidence in your soldering skills, it would be incredibly easy to bridge a couple of those contacts.
