I'm thinking it's time to upgrade a little.

It's a GF4. Won't work at all, especially with an MX.

It will run fairly well, although you will have to sacrifice a lot of the flashier graphical elements for it to do so and probably run it at 800x600

Ok. Will 1GB of DDR help, or how about a better video card. Let's say:
An X300 PCIE with 256 DDR

Stop skimping on the video card and get something decent. You've got a nice system there, which is being let down by the X300. I'd easily go for a new video card over new RAM. You have the worst PCI-E video card you can get.

this is from a post I made on ga and hilights the central role having enough ram plays in making the game work as intended:
my specs:
- xp3200+ 64 bit
- 1 gig ram
- asus v9999 6800ge (between a gt and ultra)
- 120gig wd jb hdd (boot drive)
-- settings: 2 x aa, 4 x antro, 1024x768@85 - all settings on high
I was getting the glitchy behavior (especially at start of a map), slow menus, and just lag like behavior pretty much constantly.
I then tried all settings on medium (still 2 x aa, and 4 x antro) with same res and refresh, and found it improved performance in game quite a bit.
Then i went and bought an extra gig of ram a few days ago. now i run with all settings high with 4 x aa, 4 x antro (will be testing 8 x antro), and it runs like a dream - not a glitch to be seen (even on map startups - i'm usual first in now too). even the menus now run smooth and fast, and windows runs fine 3 seconds after exiting the game - windows is running faster on an old install as well.
the extra ram makes the game run as it was obviously intended to run. do yourself a favour.

Running Low End Video Card - Exellent
Just to let all you people out there know that i am running a Nvidia GE FX5200 128MB PCI (yes thats right PCI not PCI-E or AGP card on BF2 and its a very nice.) I picked up this video card for about $120.00, 6 months ago.
I can hear you all crying now, spending all that money on a new video card just to play one game, its a shame.
Other Specs include:
1 GB SDRAM
80 GB HDD
Athlon 1800+ (1.54GB) CPU (Socket A)
So don't believe the hype about BF2 only using certain video cards or meeting certain system requirements, mine card is not on the list and works just fine, everytime !
Sorry everyone i just had to post this somewhere and it happened to be this site.
Probably doesn't even come close to the same speed as the high end cards but its just fine,
running BF2 at about 45+ FPS and Counter Strike: Source at 47.61 FPS, no glitches, no stutter, no lag and no problem !!
So get out there and frag em all !!!! BF2 is the greatest.
Shout out to Cyric, go bruz !
Peace, I'm out.

Seriously mate, if your into games you'll need to know your PC almost like the back of your hand. I would suggest using google and study any/all information about your PC you can get. Otherwise you can visit your local PC shop who can help you however that will come at a price.
You can find out what type of GFX card you have by visiting your CONTROL PANEL/SYSTEM.
Here it lists all your PC's information about CPU, RAM, GFX etc etc etc.
Most new GFX cards are PCI and most oldish ones are APG. If you have your motherboard manual it will tell you OR you can open your PC box up and take alook. Maybe even take a photo of your motherboard and forward it to myself or a friend who knows PC's.
Goodluck...

If you push your 'windows button + pause button' together it will bring up your 'system properties'. Select the 'hardware' tab then click on the 'device manager' button.
If you expand the 'display adapters' tab your vid card will be revealed (or at least the drivers will).
Now i think of it, u could probably just right click on ur desktop, select properties, then click on the settings tab.
Your monitor and display adapter will be listed there (again presuming u have the right drivers).
A sure fire way to know exactly what vid card u have is to download this program EVEREST .
That'll tell u everything about ur PC and it's freeware (not a free netspace download blah blah).
To find out what vid cards will run on your PC, u need to know what your motherboard is.
Everest will tell you. Check that, then post it here and i'll let you know.

hmmm....although I want to believe 'perfectly fine' is a desirable concept(and no offense) with such hardware specs...but I seriously doubt you're getting the pick of the hardware as first spawner or a lack of respawn lag.

I'd tend to disagree with you on that. I started off playing with only 1 gig, and only recently upgraded to 2.
The only differences it made for me, was about 30 - 60sec of load times, and added about 5 - 10 fps.
But yeah, 512? I wouldn't have thought that'd meet the min sys specs.

Yeh 1 gig just doesn't cut it.
Other than playing BF2 for fun or social reasons we play the game to WIN. To win we must be competative. To be competative you must have a PC with good hardware making 2 gig a MUST.
I've checked my system several times while running BF2 and have concluded that:
XP takes on average 256mb & BF2 takes on average 756mb.
I do have my GFX settings at HIGH to MEDIUM @ 1280x1024 with AAx2.
It runs AAx6 fine, however i found the balance between quality gfx and performance better with these settings.

:O it's on.
Beating someone with a stick of ram can't be too good for the ram.
It'd hurt like hell though.
