btw Shug, minimum P4 is 1.4 gig. maybe u have the power rig and aint saying...? lol.
I'm about dead sure this P4 is a 1.3 Ghz. When they were first offered by Dell (*background vomiting sounds*) the options were 1.3 / 1.4 / 1.5 - this was 3+ years ago but I remember it well.
Not to worry, I should have sufficient cash up in 5/6 months time to build my own rig worth about $1500 - which should be pretty crash hot.
By that time I'll certainly be needing it though :D

Well I use headphones for most of my games so most sound processors will deliver a decent quality. But my onboard is great, I don't see myself buying a soundcard.

Sony MDR-CD580 - from memory they were around $180. I've tried the Sennheiser HD500 and the Plantronics DSP500 since getting the Sony pair but they just don't compare. Great balance over low, mid and high tones, very comfortable but unfortunately they are HiFi headphones so I have to use a separate microphone - a Labtec Verse 504.

hey man,
For the CPU, im running a TT volcano 9 july edition (you may remember that the TT 9's came in half copper half high grade plastic) but this was full copper, good for cooling spread :) - I have the standard 2 x 80mm fans at the rear of the case with 2 hard drive bay cooling 80mm fans at the front and a modded 80mm fan on the side panel cooling my video and PCI cards with a max rpm of almost 22000 :) but yeah, system temperature is up there as the FSB is going nuts complimenting the clock speed :S its around 34-36 degrees, but thats not too bad..the power supply has its own dedicated 2x80mm fans with pci fan controller...so with all the fans turned up to max rpm in the power supply, HDD and case fans, its air flow is pretty beaut

Lol...you should see my computer sometimes when playing CSS with background applications...W00t for freezing every 5 seconds...Normal for when I have nothing on in the background in huge fights is about 30-40, when running around by myself it's about 60-70 and at the start, it takes about a few seconds to get into the buy menu but then I'm fine after that...With things on in the background, in huge fights or heaps of people around me such as the beginning when everyone's running from spawn, I usually freeze up..so yeh :P All settings low btw :P
Lets just say it ain't frames per seconds but seconds per frame. :p

Hmmm
Don't know about you guys, but i see a few issues with this "Story"
1. I have never seen or heard of a fan that runs at 22,000 rpm on a case - that would sound like a boeing jet - typo, or you don't know what your talking about?? Most case fans will run at what, around 3 - 6k
2. You said in your first post your temp was 29 degrees, then you say here - "system temp is up there at 34 degrees" - Once again, i think this is wrong or a typo. My pc and all i have owned even with arctic silver and tt cpu fans sit around 39 - 49.
34 is no where near "Up there" it's actually well below a standard idle temp - and 29, well you will only get that with liquid cooling, if that's even possible.
3. You have oc'd it by almost 1 gig?? why?

Possibly the accidental extra 0 on the 2200...Maybe he's got some weird ass cooling or he lives in a fridge for teh second response. For the third response, he may just be a crazy psycho like others out there who love to destroy their CPUs ^_^
My PC hovers around 30 - 32 (34 while gaming), but at a huge price. Volcano 11+ here. Am switching to one of those silent fans soon, I've been driven insane!

At one point, before I melted a hole in my case window with a soldering iron and put a fan there, I tried many ways to get my case temp down. One was putting a desktop fan pointed at the open side of my case, worked well but dust was a problem. Then I thought I can fit two 80mm fans into the front, but dust again was a problem so...

The X2 only cost $800 and i do allot on DVD encoding so the dual core processor helps because i can play some CSS (@220+fps) and still encode the dvd with ZERO drope in frame rate.
The system cost me around the $6K mark i lost count after $4k the cards where $730 wholesale. I love having the right friends :)

I would agree with that other guy....I mean I went from a MX700, to a crappy old Microsoft Intellimouse or something from 4 years ago because I didn't like the MX700 anymore...Then I bought a MX518...To be honest, besides the feel of the mouse being better, I really hate the high sensitivities of the MX518...but I haven't played FPS's with high sensitivity for years... I'd keep the MX510

Using PC3200 ram will only limit you - i.e. no overclocking. Also, the AMD systems strive on low latency ram, the Gskill PC3200 and OCZ3200 Gold series are the best ram for low latency and are by far better in performance to corsair.
Boomer. If you are interested in overclocking, i'd reccomend getting the pc4400 gskill ram TCCD/TCC5. If you can bump up the voltage on your ddr, get the OCZ Gold VX series. At around the same price range, the PC4400 will yield better performance as the CorsairXL at stock voltage and still leave you heaps of room to overclock if you wish to do so in the future. (Stock DDR ram for PC3200 = 200MHZ - gskill overclockable to 300MHZ at the same latency as the Corsair ram).
Gskill - http://www.pccasegear.com.au/prod2568.htm
Review - http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=350
I have been doing a lot of research lately to purchase some good overclocking ram.
NB: gskill and ocz also make 2X1gb ddr sticks as well.

Is overclocking really worth it anymore? It doesn't give you all that much of aa performance boost and it's not like most modern PCs are really stretched for power... I mean sure it's kind of fun as a hobby, but if I got 2 computers with exactly the same hardware and optimised the CAS latency, pumped up the FSB a little and overclocked the video card what are the odds anyone could tell the difference without a synthetic benchmark or frame counter?

Running a P4E 3.2 ghz at 4.1 with memory overclocked 40% is a huge difference. Stock prescott fan - air cooled. 1gb OCZ PC3200 platinum edition rev2 (200mhz stock oc'd to 260mhz - can go to 280). I can only imagine what the A64's can do.

The A64s are not as memory bound due to their shorter pipelines so I don't think the performance gain is as noteable...

19" LG Studioworks (old, but good - upgrading to that new 4ms samsung soon)
Func1030+ Razer Diamondbak
Upgrades to come:
Case - Antec P180 or Thermaltake Soprano
Cooling - Custom water cooling or possibly the Swiftech kit based around the storm block
Hard drive - 2x 74gb WD raptors
EDIT: Oh and Zeus13.. im skeptical of your supposed 3dmark 05 score.. care to back it up? What clock speeds and cooling were you running. how about the proc, was that OC'd as well?
if it is legit, you should sign up to www.hardforum.com, you'd have the highest 3dmark score with an x800pro there

Crossfire does not give you, as good performance as SLI. And the design is inferior to SLI. It resembles the old Voodoo 2 cards in SLI mode.
you must really need a new computer then
And secondaly if mistar is using his computer for solely word processing and e-mail it would be fine.
And also mistar if you need an upgrade for 20 bucks to a P2 or P3 just call me.

Bleeding edge hardware is never worth the money...

FWIW,
I am currently setting up an unusual gaming system...VERY good performance (IMHO) for price AUS$2500
Opteron "toledo" 165@2655mhz @1.538v with OEM HSF @ 37 degrees celcius (peak)
OCZ plat EL pc3200 ram 295mhz (2/3 divider) @ 2.87v 2x1024mb 2-2-2-5
DFI lanparty UT NF4 SLI-DR expert mobo 885mhz FSB (1770mt HTT)
Pixelview 7900GT overclocked to 550mhz core/2x750mhz mem @ 5.16v
(video card water cooled with thermaltake bigwater)
2 x WD Caviar 250gb sata 2 HDD in raid 0
1 x WD Rapter 37gb sata 2 HDD
Silverstone zeus 650w PSU
Thermaltake armour case
Prime95 stable for 12hrs;
While its still in the testing process, the results look promising..
3dmark2001 - 31,642
3dmark2003 - 17,208
3dmark2005 - 9,227
3dmark2006 - 5,439
These results are still provisional......as I expect them to rise by around 5% with a bit of fine tuning.
I am sure people with more aggressive settings will be able to O/C the same set-up to at least 3000mhz ( approx 5400+ using the P4 comparison measure ) which will add approx 10% to all scores.
In back to back testing against my old O/Ced P4
2800mhz (3385mhz) Heatpipe heatsink with dual fan
ATI radeon 9600 XT O/C to its limit
3 x 512mb legend pc3200 ram 4-4-4-8
D865PEARL mobo 800FSB
1 x WD rapter 37gb HDD sata 2
1 x seagate 40gb HDD ide 166mhz
thermaltake 480w PSU
with same settings:
Not even worth posting results but I wil....:
3dmark2001 - 13,331
3dmark2003 - 5,488
3dmark2005 - 1,764
3dmark2006 - unable to run
IMHO...
The opteron should be the best choice for ALL gamers on a buget (provided you dont mind spending a week or 2 setting up the system.....easy, but time consuming)
BTW,
at the risk of starting a spamming war....:D
For REALLY easy overclocking and safe results try a DFI expert....not perfect....but damn close:)
For a link to Lennins OverClocking analasys ( tell him your specs and he will give you rthe best stable O/C BIOS settings.....he is both clever and generous.....:D
